SUMMARY:Annual Mid-Atlantic SynBio Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The 2nd Annual Mid-Atlantic Synthetic Biology Symposium\, co-hosted by the Mid-Atlantic SynBio Alliance and MITRE\, will be November 9\, 2021\, 8:30a-5:30p\, at the MITRE campus in McLean\, VA. Come join us to hear the latest research and of opportunities in synbio in the Mid-Atlantic (MD\, DE\, DC\, VA\, NC\, SC\, GA). The full meeting agenda will be available in mid-September. Everyone is invited to present a poster. \nThere is no registration fee\, but registration is required. Registrants will receive a follow-up email a week before the symposium with additional information about the venue (address\, parking\, etc.). Due to security requirements at the meeting venue\, registration will close October 19. No walk-ins or late registrations will be allowed. Non-citizen foreign nationals may be required to provide additional information to MITRE for security purposes. Permanent US Residents/Green Card holders are not considered foreign nationals\, though they should carry their Permanent Resident/Green Card to the event.

SUMMARY:Engineered microbiomes in the CASBAH: current efforts and future directions
DESCRIPTION:The first of what will be an ongoing series of technical meetings between CASBAH partners. The agenda will include: \n\nTechnical talks covering CASBAH research on human and animal microbiomes (e.g.\, gut and skin)\, environmental microbiomes (e.g.\, soil\, marine\, and the built environment) and microbiome engineering methods\nPresentations and discussion on the ethical\, legal and social implications of microbiome engineering and deployment\nPanel discussion on the possibility and value of a CASBAH engineered microbiome research strategy\nPosters and happy hour\n\nThe meeting will be a closed event\, with registration only possible for those whose emails are on the invite list. However\, anyone in the general Capital Region that’s actively conducting research in synthetic biology or related fields and is interested in engineered microbiome research is welcome and encouraged to participate. If you have not already received an emailed invitation\, please contact the organizers at CASBAH@jhuapl.edu to get on the list.

SUMMARY:Kickoff workshop for the Capital Area Synthetic Biology Activity Hub (CASBAH)
DESCRIPTION:The greater Capital Region is a hidden gem in the field of synthetic biology research\, with world-class laboratories in academia and government\, innovative scientists\, and unparalleled proximity to sponsors. At the same time\, the number of cross-institution interactions and collaborations is perhaps smaller than it could be. In light of an increasingly competitive funding landscape and the potential benefits of strong multi-institution teams\, there is a growing interest in strengthening ties across the region. \nOn October 1\, the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) will be hosting a one-day virtual workshop to bring together leaders in synthetic biology and related fields from university\, government\, and defense labs in the region. It is our hope that this workshop will serve as the kickoff for a larger\, community-driven effort to coordinate research activities and lead to the creation of a robust regional research network—a Capital Area SynBio Activity Hub (CASBAH)\, if you will. \nThe workshop will include: \n\nIntroductions and group overviews given by leading investigators in the region\, with emphasis on specific research interests and capabilities\, type/focus of research activities (e.g.\, basic\, applied\, translational\, etc.)\, and relationships to stakeholders\nOpen discussions on the appetite for a regional research network—what it could look like\, what the goals could be\, and what activities could sustain it\nBrainstorming on how to best leverage nearby institutions to increase opportunities for junior researchers\nDevelopment of a group strategy for effective engagement with sponsors\n\nThe meeting will be a closed event\, with registration only possible for those whose emails are on the invite list. However\, anyone in the general Capital Region that’s actively conducting research in synthetic biology or related fields is welcome and encouraged to participate. If you have not already received an emailed invitation\, please contact the organizers at CASBAH@jhuapl.edu to get on the list. \nThis event is hosted by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory\, but will be made successful by you.
